Cuéntanos algo sobre tí. o soy inglesa pero me mudé a NZ, hace unos 13 años, para estar con mi pareja Kiwi. Nos conocimos en Hong Kong y después de un año de nuestra relación a distancia me mudé al otro lado del mundo para empezar la próxima aventura. Tenía una carrera de 25 años como tripulante de cabina, pero colgué las alas en 2021.
Hoy en día, trabajo como oficiante de bodas y también para el SPCA (La Sociedad de Protección de Animales) en su tienda de segunda mano.
¿Qué te inspiró a elegir tu profesión? Yo soy amante de la gente y sus cuentos. Amo la riqueza del simbolismo y de la ceremonia.
Como celebrante moderna, estoy libre de normas y tradiciones. Mi objetivo es crear ceremonias que reflejen las creencias y valores de la pareja y honrar su relación. Mi segundo trabajo funciona perfectamente en torno de mi papel de celebrante y combina todas mis pasiones: la moda, la sostenibilidad y los animales. Esta organización la siento cerca de mi corazón, ya que mis 2 gatos fueron adoptados de la SPCA.

¿Qué habilidades o cualidades consideras esenciales para hacer tu trabajo?
Celebrante: la paciencia, una curiosidad por las personas y sus historias de vida, conocer bien a la gente en poco tiempo, la escritura creativa, y hablar en público.
El papel de la SPCA: un amor por las criaturas de 4 patas (lo más destacado de mi día es cuando nuestros clientes nos visitan con sus perros) un amor por la moda de segunda mano, y un fuerte enfoque en los clientes.
¿Qué haces en tu vida fuera del trabajo?
Tengo mis clases de español con la profesora más increíble (¡Mercedes!). Disfruto del yoga, pasear por la ciudad es un pasatiempo favorito, explorar nuevos lugares, exposiciones de arte y la comida (comer y cocinar). Mis gatitos son los reales dueños de mi vida.
¿Algún logro o momento especial en tu carrera o de tu vida que quieras compartir?
Hace unos años ofrecí mis servicios de celebrante voluntaria para la organización benéfica Race4Life. Es una organización sin fines de lucro, que tiene como objetivo cumplir con los deseos de las personas que viven con enfermedades terminales en Nueva Zelanda. Tuve el gran privilegio de oficiar la boda de Aroha (“Aroha” significa el amor en el idioma maorí), una señora con una enfermedad terminal, que quería casarse con el padre de sus hijos antes de que ella falleciera. Nunca olvidaré ese día. Fue un gran privilegio estar involucrada en un momento tan simbólico.
Tell us something about yourself.
I am English but moved to New Zealand about 13 years ago to be with my Kiwi partner. We met in Hong Kong, and after a year of long-distance relationship, I moved to the other side of the world to start the next adventure. I had a 25-year career as a flight attendant but hung up my wings in 2021.
Nowadays, I work as a wedding officiant and also for the SPCA (The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) in their second-hand shop.
What inspired you to choose your profession?
I am a lover of people and their stories. I love the richness of symbolism and ceremony.
As a modern celebrant, I am free from rules and traditions. My goal is to create ceremonies that reflect the beliefs and values of the couple and honor their relationship. My second job perfectly complements my role as a celebrant and combines all my passions: fashion, sustainability, and animals. This organization is close to my heart, as my two cats were adopted from the SPCA.
I am so lucky — how many people have two jobs they love?
What skills or qualities do you consider essential for your work?
Celebrant: patience, a curiosity about people and their life stories, getting to know people well in a short time, creative writing, and public speaking.
SPCA role: a love for four-legged creatures (the highlight of my day is when our customers visit us with their dogs), a love for second-hand fashion, and a strong focus on customers.
What do you do in your life outside of work?
I take Spanish classes with the most amazing teacher (Mercedes!). I enjoy yoga, walking around the city is a favorite pastime, exploring new places, art exhibitions, and food (eating and cooking). My kittens are the real bosses of my life.
Any achievements or special moments in your career or life that you'd like to share?
A few years ago, I volunteered my celebrant services for the charity Race4Life. It is a non-profit organization that aims to fulfill the wishes of people living with terminal illnesses in New Zealand. I had the great privilege of officiating the wedding of Aroha (“Aroha” means love in the Māori language), a lady with a terminal illness, who wanted to marry the father of her children before she passed away. I will never forget that day. It was a great privilege to be involved in such a symbolic moment.
¿Cuántos y qué idiomas hablas? ¿Cuál es tu relación con ellos?
Yo soy hablante nativa de inglés. Hablo un poco de francés (en la escuela secundaria) y griego conversacional (enseñé inglés allí durante un año, hace muchos años). Y, por supuesto, hablo algo de español, un trabajo en progreso.
¿Qué proyectos o metas tienes para el futuro?
En unos años, mi pareja y yo esperamos dividir nuestro tiempo entre el Reino Unido y Nueva Zelanda. ¡Siguiendo el sol! Más viajes definitivamente figurarán en nuestros planes. Quién sabe a dónde nos llevarán nuestras aventuras…
How many languages do you speak, and what is your relationship with them?
I am a native English speaker. I speak a bit of French (in high school) and conversational Greek (I taught English there for a year, many years ago). And, of course, I speak some Spanish, a work in progress.
What projects or goals do you have for the future?
In a few years, my partner and I hope to split our time between the UK and New Zealand. Following the sun! More travel will definitely feature in our plans. Who knows where our adventures will take us…

La verdad es que Helen llegó a mí hace un par de años buscando mejorar su español. Hoy puedo decir que llegó a mí como un regalo de la vida. ¡Hasta tiene título exclusivo! Ella es mi alumnamiga.
Me da mucha satisfacción seguir encontrándonos cada semana para compartir y aprender juntas usando como vehículo el idioma que tanto nos gusta.
My relationship with Helen
The truth is that Helen came to me a couple of years ago looking to improve her Spanish. Today I can say she came to me as a gift from life. She even has an exclusive title! She is my student-friend.
It gives me great satisfaction to meet with her every week, sharing and learning together through the language we both love.
